  1. I know those roots so I didn’t have to guess..I love using “pule” (more particularly, “puling,” but didn’t know the chicken connection…it makes sense though when you think poultry, etc.

I was trying to think of a work of literature that would correspond to each of these words….

I could only come up with….

    sesquipedalophobia…Dr. Seuss? Hemingway?

Siderophobia- Fear of stars (that short story by Arthur C. Clarke where both the IBM computer and the monks in the lamasery are equally predicting the end of the universe….and the stars all go out…it’s seriously over)

Simity- The state of being pug-nosed (In French this is “camus,” oddly enough…if i’m remembering correctly…) Probably a Henry James heroine? Daisy Miller?

Pogonophobia- Morbid fear of beards. That’s so Freudian. So 19th century, early 20th century. I’ve got nothing.

Parasigmatism- The inability to pronounce the sound of the letter s. (This sort of ties into shibboleth…if you couldn’t make that sound you were slaughtered…or in another culture and time to separate out the bar-bar-barians…”barbarian” was an ancient Greek supremacist word of course…) Hmm..literature…who is a lithper in literature? Truman Capote? But not in his books lol. I’m blanking. I got nothing.

Pule-To cry like a chicken. (The Red Badge of Courage?)

Idioglossia- The invented speech of children who are closely related, used for private communication. (Vonnegut’s one novel…is it Slapstick? The one where the Chinese all shrink themselves…love that one…the twins put their heads together to communicate. Gorgeous images in that one!)

Thaasophobia- Fear of sitting. (Smithers in the E.R. on that one episode of the Simpsons! Lisa offers him her seat. I think they edited that out when it went into reruns. I guess the censors finally got it. Hardly literary but…)

Zemmiphobia- Fear of the great mole rat. (I’ve got nothing. Watership Down?)
